Where are you from and where do you live now?
I am from South Korea, lived in London and am currently back in Seoul.
I understand you recently graduated. What school did you attend and what did you study?
I studied Menswear design at Central Saint Martins in London.
What was your favorite class and why?
I enjoyed the illustration class my first year. I've always enjoyed drawing with different mediums so it was a great class. Since illustration class does not give a mark, I was able to enjoy the entire class without stress. I also enjoyed every project that I failed and did again.
What are you currently creating?
Currently creating my workshop in Seoul. I also have an exhibition in Korea opening December first so I am planning to create a dream project.
Who is your favorite artist or musician. Why?
Lee Sora, her voice always makes me moody. It helps me when I need to focus on a project.
What is the most valuable advice you've received?
Pretty means nothing. Impress people with more than pretty.
Have you had a teacher that has had a profound influence on you? How so?
All my tutors have somewhat influenced me. I am always open to suggestions and all the tutors I had in London were helpful every time in different ways; whether it was how to design, how to develop visual language. Patricia, my CSM textile foundation course tutor, was very helpful when I was just starting to learn about fashion. Taekyoung gave me the best advice. Chris, the menswear course lead and Louis the pattern cutter were always there when I needed some help with my project.
What have some of your experiences out of school taught you?
I have worked for a fashion magazine and it was an entirely new experience from university studio life. It made me work much faster than I ever had before and this helped me a lot when I was doing my final senior collection. I knew that everything might go wrong at the last moment so I did everything to complete the collection and create some extra pieces. Also I was taught, as a magazine correspondent, how to best understand situations and persuade people, which is very helpful.
What are your thoughts on sustainability? Was it taught in school?
Sustainability is important and it has always been taught at CSM. I have used recycled denim which was sponsored by Tejido Royo. Also I have made knitted accessories out of leftover pattern cuts. I am always thinking about sustainability when designing.
What would be your dream project?
For me fashion is always dreaming something new, so every project I do is a dream.
